Beware of Fake Himalayan Salt Lamps – Zero Benefit in Fake

fake himalayan salt lamps

Due to the growing popularity, Fake Himalayan Salt lamps are popping up everywhere.  Less than honest manufactures and businesses are capitalizing on this hot new trend.

Himalayan salt lamps are not only beautiful decor pieces, they have many health benefits and the buyer demand is growing rapidly.  This often opens the door to scammers and is also part of the reason why some claim Himalayan Salt lamps are a scam or don’t work.

How to Tell if Your Salt Lamp is a Fake?

There are several ways to tell if your salt lamp is fake.

Real Himalayan Salt Lamps Sweat!

If you lamp isn’t sweating you probably have a fake.  It’s part of how they work.  The proper term for this is Hygroscopy.  The cleansing of air by absorbing moisture and airborne particles  and evaporating pure water.

Many think their salt lamp is leaking and become concerned, but it’s just a sign that your salt lamp is the real deal.

While this is one of the less desirable features of a real salt lamp, there are things you can do to help this.

Please remember to protect your furniture.

Fake Himalayan Salt Lamps Can be White or Bright

If you salt lamp is really bright or white, it’s probably not genuine.

Salt lamps should omit a soft glow.  It it lights up an entire room, that is not a good sign

The light is pinkish or orange in color.

If you salt lamp is not pink or orange in color, but white, it’s doubtful it’s real Himalayan salt.

While there is a such thing as white Himalayan salt, it’s very rare and very expensive.  If your lamp is white and was cheap, you have a dud.

Real Himalayan Salt Lamps are Fragile

They will not take a beating.  They chip, and if dropped will usually break.

If you accidentally bang it on something and it doesn’t chip or crumble a bit, it’s not real.

If when you pick it up, you don’t get salt dust on your hands, it may be fake.

Many times they will not survive shipping, which brings me to my next point.

Poor Packaging or Poor Return Policy

Legitimate distributors and manufactures are aware of how fragile Himalayan Salt Lamps are.  They will be packed with care.

These distributors and manufacturers will also have a reasonable return policy due to this simple fact.

If you get a salt lamp and it’s not packaged with protection, buyer beware.

This is especially true in those big box stores where you find them.  You will find a thin box and zero packing materials.  Not a good sign.

So make sure and check out the return policy and if you get a salt lamp poorly packaged and it survives the trip to your home, there may be a problem Houston.

Check Where the Salt Came From

fake salt lampsHimalayan sea salt is found in the mines at the Western edge of the Himalayan mountains in Khewra Pakistan.  It is not located anywhere else on earth.

This should be plainly stated on their website if you are shopping online.

I buy all of my salt lamps at the Himalayan Salt Shop.  They are real and I trust them.

You Won’t  Feel the Benefits of a Fake Salt Lamp

Providing you have chosen the correct size salt lamp for your room, you should feel some benefits.

My house is old and has a musty smell especially in a rainy season.  The salt lamp cuts down on this musty smell tremendously.

With the right size and right amount of salt lamps in your home, you should notice an improvement in your overall air quality and reap the health benefits.

Summary of  Signs of Fake Salt Lamps

How to Clean a Himalayan Salt Block

cleaning a himalayan salt block

Cleaning Your Himalayan Salt Block

You need to know how to clean a himalayan salt block if you want it to last.  They are big, bulky and heavy, but they are so delicate.  If not cared for properly, they will crack, break and not last long at all.

clean a himalayan salt blockA lot of information out there will tell you to just wipe it down with a wet cloth.  Those people apparently don’t cook like I do on my salt block because a damp cloth just doesn’t cut it for me.  A damp cloth won’t cut through the build up of juices and food debris that accumulates during cooking on a Himalayan salt block.

This image is what mine looks like after the last time I cooked Salmon on my salt block.   Not a pretty site and it’s not just the top surface that gets all caked up like this.  The juices from your food run down the sides of the himalayan salt block and cake up there too! It’s not that simple to clean a Himalayan Salt Plate.

This little grilling companion tool is a lifesaver and makes cleaning your salt block easy!

How to Clean Your Himalayan Salt Block

You do not wash a salt block.  It’s salt and it will dissolve.  This should go without saying but I will say it anyway.  Don’t put it in the dishwasher.  It won’t be there when the wash is over.  Never use soap, it’s antimicrobial, so germs aren’t going to live there.

  • First, let it cool.  It’s just too bulky to try to handle hot.
  • Get a good grilling tool and scrape all the debris off.
  • Wipe off with a damp cloth
  • Pat dry with a good absorbent cloth

Can You Use Water When You Clean a Himalayan Salt Block?

Charcoal Companion CC4108 Salt Block Cleaning BrushCharcoal Companion CC4108 Salt Block Cleaning Brush

I do give my salt block a quick rinse if it’s really bad. Then I use a grill tool like the one shown here to scrub around on it real quick and rinse it real quick again. If you feel you need to use water to clean your himalayan salt block, do so sparingly and make sure to dry it thoroughly.

The himalayan salt does not dissolve as fast as your ordinary table salt. I found this out when I tried putting just the salt rocks in my bath. The bath got cold before the rocks dissolved. An hour later, the rocks where still sitting in the bottom of my bath.

If you are going to use water on it, use it sparingly and dry it as fast as possible.

The important thing is to make sure it’s dry and keep it dry.  These blocks will absorb moisture from the air and sweat, which can deteriorate them over time.  You can store them in a ziplock bag, wrap them in a towel for storage or you can get a salt block protective case.

These Himalayan salt blocks will last you through dozens of cooking experiences if you heat it properly for each use, clean it correctly and store it in a dry place.

Himalayan Sea Salt and Honey – Magic Bed Time Tonic!

himalayan sea salt and honey

Do you just want to fall asleep easily and stay asleep?  People are getting less and less sleep these days.  The normal 8 hour night, has turned into an average of 6 to 7 hours.  We are not only going to bed tired, but we are often waking up tired.  For many of us, out bodies are simply not getting enough rest to recharge for the next day. Himalayan sea salt and honey just might change this for us!

I don’t have many issues with falling asleep but staying asleep is a different story.  I sometimes wake up feeling more tired than I went to bed, like I was working all night in my sleep or something.  Recently I read an article on Himalayan salt for sleep by adding one ingredient to it before bedtime.  It’s now a part of my nightly ritual with brushing my teeth.

So Why Himalayan Sea Salt and Honey Combination?

Himalayan Salt for Sleep

himalayan salt for sleepHimalayan Sea salt if one of the purest forms of salt on the planet.  It’s all natural, and has not been processed or had chemicals added for non clumping purposes.  It’ has 80 minerals in it that have not been altered by any chemical processing.  Regular table salt is heated to 1200 degrees.

This himalayan salt helps lower stress hormones and balance acidity and alkalinity (cause of inflamation).  We wake up at night because our adrenaline spikes.  The salt helps control this.  Himalayan salt for sleep also regulates serotonin and melatonin.  You may actually wake up happier.  Some use this as a natural aid for depression.

Honey For Sleep

Many already know that honey helps with sleep.  You need to use organic raw honey by the way. It is more expensive, but trust me, you want to invest into this.  Despite honey being sweet, it does not cause blood sugar spikes.  Honey helps the body product liver glycogen, a substance your brain needs for energy.  You brain needs energy when you sleep, and if you brain doesn’t have that energy, it can’t get rid of the adrenaline that wakes you up or the stress hormone cortisol.

I have been using Himalayan Sea Salt and honey for two months now before I got to bed.  I dreamed of puppies and kittens the first night, no joke.  I was also better able to remember my dreams upon waking.  They are crystal clear when I wake up first thing in the morning.  I do feel more alert as well.  I work from home as a blogger and sometimes mornings are my toughest time.  I have churned out blog posts first thing in the morning, and trust me, that just doesn’t happen often with me. I won’t be going to bed without my himalayan sea salt and honey concoction again.  I can tell the difference when I don’t take my salt and honey bedtime tonic.

Sleep Recipe with Himalayan Sea Salt and Honey

himalayan sea salt and honey for sleepYou will need 5 parts honey to 1 part Himalayan sea salt. Make sure the honey is raw and organic and your himalayan sea salt is fine ground.  It might take a while for course ground to dissolve and I can’t imagine the larger rocks would be pleasant.  You can mix some up ahead of time and store it in a glass jar.  Below should last you about 10 days.

5 teaspoons of raw honey

1 teaspoon of himalayan salt (fine ground)

Just take about a 1/2to 3/4 teaspoon and put it under your tongue before you go to bed.  You can also mix this in a bit of warm water and drink it if you like, but under the tongue helps it to be absorbed quickly by the body.  You can also just adjust this recipe and make one dose at a time, up to you and your preference.

Storing your Himalayan Sea Salt and Honey

Himalayan Sea Salt is Antimicrobial as well as Honey.  Raw Honey never goes bad.  I mix up enough to last me about a week and store it in a glass jar on my kitchen cabinet.  I just pop a small spoonful in my mouth, mostly under my tongue and then just swallow it.

If you have trouble getting to sleep or staying asleep, or just wake up with low energy, try this himalayan sea salt and honey mixture.  When you get a good nights rest, we function better the next day.  We have more energy, our brains are more alert and we have a better overall sense of well being in general.

Imagine if you could start getting a good nights sleep naturally every night, how much better your life would be! If you want to really incorporate Himalayan salt into your sleep routine, you can try a Himalayan Salt bath as well!

I like to make this bedtime tonic of Himalayan Sea Salt and Honey in advance in batches. It is recommended to store it in a glass container.   I am much more likely to not miss it at night if I already have it prepped as opposed to having to prep it right before bed.  This little jars are perfect to store it in.

Himalayan Salt Lamps for Kids-Most Unusual Gift for Kids

Himalayan Salt Lamps for kids is a great idea, and they love them.  It’s like a cool night light.  Most kids don’t like to sleep in a dark room, and some are embarrassed that they have to have a night light.  These salt lamps are like decorative features and they have health benefits as well.  This makes a salt lamp the perfect, most unusual gift for kids.

My best friend bought her 12 year old son one of these salt lamps for a cool Christmas gift last year and he loves it.  He keeps it on all the time.  Out of all of the presents her received, this was one he would never in a million years have guessed what it was.  It was also his most favorite gift and not one of those that gets attention for a few days and then tossed aside.

Salt Lamps for Kids with Sinus Problems and Allergies

Many claim that a salt lamp will help with allergies.  It is said that they improve your indoor air quality.  Salt attracts moisture from the air.  That by the way, is why we put rice in our salt shakers.  The warmth the bulb in a salt lamp heat the salt and evaporates the moisture producing negative ions.  Much like how a thunderstorm works.

Dirt, dust, dander etc., create positive ions.  The negative ions produced by the Himalayan Salt lamps neutralize these ions, naturally cleansing the air. Does it actually work.  You will read different reviews on this.  Some swear by them, and some say it’s all just bull crap.  I think you have to try it for yourself.  One thing is for sure, it certainly won’t hurt.

I have one on my bedside table and I can honestly say that the one with the lamp collects less dust than the one on the other side of my bed. I noticed this on my quarterly dusting of my room.  In light of this, it must do something.

Animal Shaped Salt Lamps for Kids

Himalayan Swan Salt Lamp

Yes, you can get Himalayan salt lamps in animal shapes. These are great gifts for younger children. I have seen fish, dogs, cats, turtles, birds, swans, bunnies and many more animal shaped salt lamps. Kids love these. You can find them on Amazon usually and in some specialty retail stores. I like the ones that have a dimmer switch if possible.

Himalayan Salt lamps make a cool and unsual gift for kids!  The love them.  If your kid is a box shaker that tries to guess what their presents are, this is one they will never guess .  It’s heavy for starters and packed tightly so they don’t shake around in the box.  They may think You wrapped a brick up!

Make Gravlax Salmon with Himalayan Salt Blocks

make salmon gravlax

Salt is the key ingredient to make Gravlax Salmon.  Many suggest that you weight the Salmon down while you are curing it.  Because of this, using Himalayan Salt blocks when making Gravlax Salmon is just an easy no brainer.  When it is ready to eat, serving this Gravlax on a pretty pink Himalayan Salt Block is the ultimate presentation.

What is Gravlax

Gravlax is Nordic dish of Salmon cured in salt, sugar and dill.  It is mainly served as an appetizer with crackers or toasted bread with a mustard sauce.

The term Gravlax is Scandinavian.  The word Grav means bury or dig and the word lax means Salmon.  In the Middle Ages fishermen would cover Salmon in salt and bury it above the high tide to cure.
